During a fresh conversation celebrating his 100th day in office, the official Windrush representative shared worries that the Black British community are raising concerns about whether the country is "going backwards."
Growing Concerns About Migration Discussions
The Rev Clive Foster stated that Windrush generation victims are asking themselves if "the past is recurring" as UK politicians direct policies toward lawful immigrants.
"I refuse to live in a society where I feel like I'm an outsider," the commissioner stated.
National Outreach
Since assuming his duties in early summer, the commissioner has engaged with approximately 700 survivors during a nationwide visit throughout the Britain.
In recent days, the Home Office disclosed it had accepted a range of his proposals for reforming the struggling Windrush compensation scheme.
Demand for Impact Assessment
The commissioner is pushing for "proper stress testing" of any planned alterations to immigration policy to ensure there is "a clear understanding of the effect on people."
The commissioner indicated that legislation could be necessary to ensure no future government abandoned assurances made following the Windrush situation.
Background Information
During the Windrush scandal, Commonwealth Britons who had come to the UK legally as UK citizens were mistakenly labeled as illegal migrants years later.
Demonstrating comparisons with rhetoric from the seventies, the UK's migration debate reached further troubling depths when a government lawmaker reportedly said that legal migrants should "return to their countries."
Population Apprehensions
The commissioner described that individuals have telling him how they are "afraid, they feel insecure, that with the ongoing discussion, they feel more uncertain."
"I believe people are also concerned that the hard-fought commitments around inclusion and citizenship in this United Kingdom are in danger of disappearing," the commissioner said.
The commissioner revealed hearing people express concerns about "is this possibly similar events happening again? This is the sort of discourse I was experiencing years ago."
Restitution Upgrades
Part of the recent changes revealed by the government department, affected individuals will now receive three-quarters of their compensation award upfront.
Furthermore, applicants will be compensated for unmade deposits to employment retirement funds for the initial instance.
Looking Forward
He highlighted that one positive outcome from the Windrush controversy has been "increased conversation and awareness" of the World War era and after UK Black experience.
"We don't want to be labeled by a controversy," Foster added. "That's why people step up showing their achievements with honor and say, 'observe, this is the contribution that I have made'."
The commissioner concluded by noting that individuals desire to be recognized for their integrity and what they've given to British society.
