The man behind the scheme, who devised a plan to supply hard-to-detect performance-enhancing drugs to top competitors such as MLB legends Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi and sprinting gold medalist Jones years back, has passed away. He was 75.

Government Probe and Legal Outcomes

An official inquiry regarding another company Conte founded, the Bay Area lab, resulted in the convictions of Jones, top track cyclist Tammy Thomas, and retired NFL player Dana Stubblefield, along with coaches, distributors, a trainer, a chemist and a lawyer.

Public Statements and Prison Time

He, who spent several months in a federal facility for illegal drug sales, talked publicly about his high-profile athletes. He went on broadcast media to state he had observed three-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones use a syringe with HGH, but always refrained from incriminating Barry Bonds, the baseball star.

The Mitchell Report

This probe inspired the publication Game of Shadows. Just days following the book's publication in the mid-2000s, baseball Commissioner Bud Selig hired ex-senator George Mitchell to investigate steroids.

Conte stated he sold steroids referred to as certain undetectable drugs and advised on their usage to dozens of top performers, including Jason Giambi, a multiple-time All-Star, the Mitchell report said.

Employing banned drugs represents a major risk to the honesty of the game,” the report stated. “Broad usage by competitors of such substances puts at a disadvantage the honest athletes who decline to take them and leads to skepticism about the accuracy of baseball records.”

The report noted the problems didn’t develop overnight. He said each participant in the sport in the prior two decades – covering leaders, team executives, the players’ association and athletes themselves – bore partial blame for what he termed “the steroids era”.

Investigation Origins

The official probe into the laboratory began with a revenue officer examining the corporate garbage. The defendant eventually confessed to a pair of the numerous counts he faced in 2005 ahead of a court case. Half a dozen of the defendants sentenced were caught deceiving grand jurors.

Further Legal Actions

His fitness instructor Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges stemming from his ties to the lab. He received a sentence to three months in prison and the same duration of home confinement.

His Court Proceedings

Bonds was indicted for lying to a grand jury about receiving PEDs and went on trial in that year. The government abandoned the case four years later when the government decided not to contest an overturned ruling to the supreme court.

A multiple MVP winner and star performer, he retired after the that season with 762 homers, exceeding the milestone of that number that Aaron achieved from the 1950s to 1970s. Bonds denied consciously consuming banned substances but has not been voted to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Conte's Post-Prison Life

Conte stated in an interview in a 2010 discussion that “sportspeople break rules to triumph, but the federal representatives also bend the rules.” He wondered whether the conclusions in these trials merited the work.

Post-incarceration, he returned to work in the late 2000s by rebooting a supplements company he had founded two decades earlier called SNAC System. He operated in the same building that was home to the original company in the California city.

Unapologetic Views

Conte stayed unrepentant about his key part in providing custom PEDs to elite athletes. He argued he simply helped “even the competition” in a sports environment teeming with cheaters.

To a WADA member, a former participant of the WADA, Conte could be compared to distributing cocaine or heroin. “This involves unlawful substance distribution. You are talking about using drugs in breach of national statutes,” the doctor remarked in 2007. “This isn't charity and this is not some do-gooding. It's illegal sales.”
